Born July 5, 1909; died January 18, 1973. Early English Renaissance scholar. Edward Louis Surtz, S.J., was born in Cleveland. He entered the Society of Jesus in1931 after receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from John Carroll University. In 1934 he received his Master of Arts in English from Xavier University, and his Ph.
